Manual Asymmetry During Object Release

چکیده
Occupational therapists traditionally have had a keen interest in the issue of hand p re f e rence (Clark & Allen, 1985; Clerke & Clerke, 2001; Knickerboker, 1980). Children who are delayed in developing a consistent pre f e rence commonly a re recommended for occupational therapy because of its presumed effects on fin e motor skills, bilateral coordination, and midline crossing (Fi s h e r, Mu r r a y, & Bu n d y, 1991; St i l well, 1987). In addition, patients with hemiplegia, hand injury, or upper-extremity disease often re q u i re “dominance retraining.” Although a common assumption is that performance of the nondominant hand is signific a n t l y diminished compared with the dominant hand, previous studies, particularly those i n volving kinematic and kinetic analysis, have yielded differing results. A major concern of occupational therapy also has been the identification of task parameters and conditions that affect performance through the use of task analysis. T h e re f o re , it is important to understand what task conditions influence asymmetrical hand skill for both assessment and treatment purposes. Yet, little is known about how p e rformance differences between the dominant and nondominant hands are affected by task conditions, and few studies within the occupational therapy litera t u re have addressed this issue (Larkin, 1989; Walsh, Belding, Ta y l o r, & Nu n l e y, 1993).

Age and practice effects on inter-manual performance asymmetry
Manual dexterity declines with increasing age, however, the way in which inter-manual asymmetry responds to aging is unclear. Our purpose was to determine the effect of age and practice on inter-manual performance asymmetry in an isometric force pinch line tracing task that varied in difficulty within segments. Thirty right-handed participants, five males and five females in each of three age g...
متن کاملInfluence of task complexity on manual asymmetries.
The degree of manual asymmetry is generally assumed to vary with task complexity. However, task complexity as a factor in manual asymmetries has rarely been examined directly. Further, the results of psychophysical studies indicate that manual asymmetry increases with task complexity, while physiological studies consistently report a reduction of manual asymmetries in more complex tasks. The us...
متن کاملBetween-hand difference in ipsilateral deactivation is associated with hand lateralization: fMRI mapping of 284 volunteers balanced for handedness
In right-handers (RH), an increase in the pace of dominant hand movement results in increased ipsilateral deactivation of the primary motor cortex (M1). By contrast, an increase in non-dominant hand movement frequency is associated with reduced ipsilateral deactivation. This pattern suggests that inhibitory processes support right hand dominance in right-handers and raises the issues of whether...
متن کاملEvaluation of a Walking Tractor Drawn Peanut Harvester and Comparing It With Manual Harvesting
The object of this study was evaluation of a walking tractor drawn peanut harvester at different conditions of soil moisture content and forward speed and comparing it with manual harvesting. The evaluation factors for peanut harvester were two levels of soil moisture content and three levels of forward speed. The results revealed that the effect of soil moisture content was only significant on...

متن کاملShift of manual preference in right-handers following unimanual practice.
The effect of unimanual practice of the non-preferred hand on manual asymmetry and manual preference for sequential finger movements was evaluated in right-handers before, immediately after, and 30 days following practice. The results demonstrate that unimanual practice induced a persistent shift of manual preference for the experimental task in most participants, but no significant correlation...
